Eddins, business manager and acting president, it was unani mously decided to petition the North Carolina legislatiu’e to make Southeastern Community College a branch in the consol idated university system. Donald Causey, reading instructor, re ported that he had received in formation from undisclosed sources to the effect that East Carolina College’s chances of gaining university status were very slim. In view of this re port we could become a pilot branch for the university in southeastern North Carolina and then when East Carolina’s status had improved to an acceptable level they could possibly be come a sub-branch of Southeast ern, NEED 26 MILLION Mr. Eddins pointed out that a bond issue of $26 million would be needed in order to finance construction of the necessary new facilities. He stated that at the present time no policy existed concerning the procedure covering the situation and that he would have to ask Dr. I, E. Reedy, Director of Administration, De partment of Community Colleges, in Raleigh exactly what posture should be assumed. After a tele phone call to Raleigh, Mr. Ed dins informed the group that Dr. Reedy suggested the proper pos ture could be assumed by bend ing forward and grasping the ankles with the hands. Dr. Charles R. King, Dean of In struction, asked whether a $26 million bond issue was really necessary and moved the Mr. Eddins and the board might ex plore the possibility of acquiring the funds from profits realized through the sale of sandwiches in the lobby. Dr. King informed the Board that he had connections and I have so many friends that I ^yould be willing to let them in cannot lose. Most believe me to the deal. Kenneth Jordan, History In structor, made a motion that was seconded by Joe Nance, Bas ketball coach, that the monies be acquired through the sale of U S Savings Bonds sold via a cliain letter. This motion was discussed at length and eventually defeated on the grounds that col lege officials might be liable for mail fraud should the matter reach the ears of the postal de partment. Since non© of the motions deal- ing with the necessary funds were passed, it was suggested that Mr, Eddins create another administrative position to handle the matter. This person would be known as the Dean of Fund Raising Activities. WHAT name? A lengthy and heated discussion developed over the name of the proposed branch of the Universi ty. The Whiteville faction led by Dr. Jesse Fisher, Vice-Chair man of the Board of Trustees and Rebecca Proctor, art in structor, contended that the new branch should be named The Uni versity of North Carolina at Whiteville. Equally vehement, though less coherent, was a clique represented by Sam Koonce, board member and Donald Causey reading instructor, who insisted that the branch be known as The University of North Carolina at Chadbourn. Gary Zeller, hu manities Instructor, offered a compromise solution by suggest ing tlBt the entire student body forcibly invade Boys Home at Lake waccamaw, take over their campus, and make it the site of the new branch which would then be known as the University of North Carolina at Lake wacca maw. It was pointed out that with the campus at the Lake it would be more easy to facilitate eventual annexation of Wil mington College as a sub-branch. Armand Opitz, Dean of Student Personnel Services, made a motion that the decision for nam* ing of the branch be left to hi; office and suggested that ths student g^overnment assoclatloi; should hold a contest among th students to decide. Since man: of the faculty members didn’t know that the student government existed, this was soundly de feated. Henry Wyche, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, re vived Mr, Zeller’s suggestion about situating the new brand at Lake Waccamaw. Mr. Wyche stressed the historical signifi cance of the legend of Lak" waccamaw and pointed out tha. many and important institution had Waccamaw In its name.
